Weather Spotters

The Weather Spotters group is comprised of DES Auxiliary Police, DES Rescue Squad, local Amateur (ham) radio operators, and other trained volunteers.

These dedicated men and women are trained by the National Weather Service as certified SKYWARN storm spotters.

Constant communications with the 911 dispatch center as well as two-way radio contact with personnel at the Paducah National Weather Service Office insure the most professional weather spotter operation in the region.

Weather data is exchanged between spotters in the field and the Weather Service Office using a dedicated radio repeater system.
In fact, the Paducah-McCracken Co. DES Storm Spotters were honored in 1997 with the first "Outstanding Spotter Award" ever from the National Weather Service Paducah office. This is from the 68 counties that the NWS office serves!

Our latest weather instrument is portable wind speed indicators to give meterologists at the weather service the latest up to date severe weather information.

Training is held annually in McCracken County for weather spotters. If you'd like to join, let us know by e-mailing at kking[at]co.mccracken.ky.us
