A Paducah police officer was treated at a local hospital after he was attacked by a dog this morning.

Officer Will Gilbert went to a home in the 1100 block of Greer Street to conduct a follow-up investigation on a theft case. He was standing by his cruiser on the street, and a pit bull dog was chained in the front yard of the home.

The dog broke its chain and attacked Gilbert, biting him on the left thigh. As the dog was biting him, Gilbert fired one shot from his duty weapon, a Glock 40mm handgun. The round missed the dog and hit the pavement. The dog then ran back to its home.

Animal Control officers were notified and Gilbert was taken to Lourdes Hospital for treatment. The investigation is continuing.
