Make plans to attend the Christmas Parade this Saturday, December 4 in downtown Paducah. The parade begins at 5:00 p.m. at 14th and Broadway and travels down Broadway until it turns at 2nd Street and disbands at Monroe Street. “Christmas Music Galore” is the theme for this year’s parade with music and lights required on all entries. The parade averages more than 100 entries. Santa will make a special appearance at the end of the parade on the official Santa float.
This year the Christmas Parade is proud to honor Mayor Albert Jones as Grand Marshal. Mayor Jones served as Paducah’s mayor from 1996 to 2000. Mayor Bill Paxton says, “Mayor Jones played a major role in making the City of Paducah more beautiful. He focused on the demolition of dilapidated homes and the revitalization of the Morgan-Cornell and Conrad Heights neighborhoods with new curbs and gutters. Among his many accomplishments, Mayor Jones served as Commonwealth Attorney and served for several terms in the House of Representatives. We are proud to have Mayor Jones as the Christmas Parade’s Grand Marshal.”
Flip the Switch, the annual downtown holiday lighting ceremony, will be during the Christmas Parade. Mayor Bill Paxton will turn the downtown holiday lights on when the parade vehicle he is riding in reaches the corner of 7th and Broadway. Flip the Switch turns on the downtown lights and the lighted Christmas tree located at the Water Street floodwall opening next to the municipal parking lot.
Parade entries will marshal on Broadway between 14th and 17th Streets, on Fountain Avenue between Broadway and Jefferson Street, and on Jefferson between 13th and 17th Streets. To prepare for the parade, those street sections will close beginning at 3:00 p.m. on December 4. The Parks Services Department also asks the public to refrain from parking in the parade preparation area from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to help limit the congestion of vehicles and floats.
The Parks Services Department will accept entry applications for the 2010 Christmas Parade through 5:00 p.m. on November 30. A $20 fee applies. If a group or organization would like to be a part of the parade, an entry form is available at www.paducahky.gov or at the Parks Department office. Entry forms received after November 30 will not be accepted.
