At the January 9, 2018, meeting, the Paducah Board of Commissioners appointed Parks & Recreation Department Director Mark Thompson to serve as Paducah’s Interim City Manager. His City Manager role began January 13.
The duties and responsibilities of the City Manager are listed in Chapter 2 Section 2-93 of the City of Paducah Code of Ordinances.
A Kentucky native, Thompson is a 1978 graduate of the University of Kentucky in Recreation Administration with additional undergraduate studies at Western Kentucky University and graduate work in public administration at Florida Atlantic University.
Prior to his appointment as Paducah’s Interim City Manager, Thompson served more than 16 years as Paducah’s Director of Parks & Recreation. In his time there, the department was named Department of the Year four times by the Kentucky Recreation and Park Society. Thompson has 39 years of public service in parks and recreation with 32 of those as a department director.
Prior to commencing his service with Paducah, Thompson’s career included stops with Louisville (Kentucky) Metro Parks, Georgetown-Scott County (Kentucky) Parks and Recreation, Boynton Beach (Florida) Recreation and Park Department, Homewood (Alabama) Parks and Recreation Department, and Vestavia Hills (Alabama) Parks and Recreation Department.
Thompson and his wife, Gretchen, have been married for 31 years. They are proud of their three daughters: Emily Thompson of Mobile, Alabama; Sally Wiggins of Paducah; and Molly Thompson of Paducah.
Thompson has vast experience as a coach and umpire. Between 2002 and 2012, Thompson coached girls’ soccer teams at Paducah Tilghman High School and at St. Mary High School. Thompson also has umpired NCAA women’s softball for 23 years.
