Events for the annual 8th of August Emancipation Celebration are scheduled for August 2 through 8, 2017. The theme this year is Back in the Day - Going Down Memory Lane.
The Parks Services Department is holding a free RIVERfront Concert Series event on August 3 featuring local group Soul Creation from 6 until 7 p.m. and then enjoy the music of Bizz and the Everyday People from 7 until 8:30.
Various activities and vendors will be held at Robert Coleman Park on Friday, August 4 through Saturday, August 5. For the safety of the festival-goers on those days, Caldwell and Husbands Streets between 9th Street and Walter Jetton Boulevard will be closed to traffic while activities are underway at the park. Ninth Street also will be closed between Husbands and Caldwell Streets.
The annual Emancipation Celebration Parade organized by the W.C. Young Community Center will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 5. Parade line-up begins at 10 a.m. The parade, which typically attracts approximately 60 entries, will start at Walter Jetton Boulevard and Washington Street, travel south along Walter Jetton Boulevard, and finish at Robert Coleman Park. Festivities and vendors will be at Robert Coleman Park immediately after the parade and throughout the afternoon and early evening.
