Date of release: November 21, 2018
On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, historic downtown Paducah will be bustling with holiday shoppers and festivities. On November 24, enjoy the Dickens of a Christmas, Downtown Paducah’s Small Business Saturday event organized by Paducah Main Street, a division of the Paducah Planning Department. From 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., downtown Paducah will be transformed into a Dickens village with free Victorian carriage rides, carolers, characters in costume, and Santa. Enjoy free hot chocolate, wassail, and s'mores at the fire pit near the gazebo.
Downtown Development Specialist/Paducah Main Street Director Katie Axt says, “Dickens of a Christmas has become a Paducah tradition for family and friends to spend the day downtown. Each year, more businesses participate, and more people come to be a part of this special community and celebrate the holidays together.”
Santa will make a grand entrance down Broadway in the carriage to the gazebo at 10 a.m. Disney princesses will grace downtown and be available to ride with families on carriages around Market House. Kids will also enjoy holiday crafts at MAKE Paducah and at the Smedley Yeiser. In front of McMurry & Livingston, the McCracken County Public Library will have crafts and make sure to gather around for storytime starting at 1 p.m.
Many of the stores and restaurants will have special sales and giveaways. Paducah Beer Werks will return with a craft beer tent, serving Beers of Christmas Past, and the Smedley Yeiser will hold its Artisan Market again this year. Paducah Area Transit will provide a free Jolly Trolley between downtown and the Smedley Yeiser. Hop aboard and enjoy holiday music and entertainment while shopping between destinations.
Axt adds, “The holiday season is the most important time of year for our small businesses. By visiting our local stores, restaurants, and cultural attractions, you help create jobs in Paducah and keep our tax dollars local which contributes to public services, schools, and amenities like parks and the library. Plus, these businesses give back by strengthening our community, creating vibrancy, and a more interesting experience. Also it’s fun!”
This is the fifth year for the City to host Dickens of a Christmas. Sponsors for this year’s event are Paducah Bank and Four Rivers Nuclear Partnership. Partners include Paducah Area Transit System, Paducah Ambassadors, Paducah Life Magazine, McMurry & Livingston, McCracken County Public Library, Graves County High School, Lyon County High School, Paducah Tilghman High School, and Boy Scouts of America Pack 7.
Small Business Saturday is dedicated to supporting small businesses across the country. Founded by American Express in 2010, this day is celebrated on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
