Applications Being Accepted for Citizens' Police Academy

The 2013 Citizens’ Police Academy (CPA) will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, August 1, 2013, in the training room of the Paducah Police Department’s headquarters located at 1400 Broadway.

The Citizens’ Police Academy is a free program for citizens 18 years of age or older who live in Paducah, McCracken County, or the surrounding area.  The classes are held on Thursday nights for 11 weeks.  Class size is limited, and all applicants are subject to a criminal background check prior to acceptance.  Applications may be downloaded from the City’s website or picked up at the police department.

Paducah Police Administrative Captain Mark Roberts says, “In my 25 years as a police officer, I’ve seen many programs come and go.  In my opinion, the Citizens’ Police Academy has been the most successful program in getting police officers and the citizens that we serve together in a mutually beneficial learning environment.  The citizens learn how their police department works, why officers do the things that they do, and that reality is a far cry from what TV programs show.  In turn, the officers make a connection with the community members in an exchange of ideas and information. Everyone benefits!”

CPA attendees are exposed to some of the same training that police officers receive, and witness presentations from the department’s K9 units, bomb squad, SWAT team, and others.  They also participate in a mock crime scene investigation and visit the firearms range.  The classes expose citizens to a number of current law enforcement issues and the latest Paducah Police Department procedures.

Capt. Roberts adds, “Sergeant George Johnson does an outstanding job in coordinating the Citizens’ Police Academy.  We look forward to having Class #18 be the best session yet.”  In addition to the various police officers who help with the classes, Volunteers in Police Service (V.I.P.S.) help facilitate the CPA classes and promote the community oriented policing initiative.  V.I.P.S. assist with crowd control and public safety at events around Paducah.

The Paducah Police Department’s CPA was formed in 2002 to give citizens a better understanding of the inner workings of the department.  The CPA has graduated 17 classes of more than 320 citizens.  If you have questions about the CPA, contact Sgt. George Johnson at or 444-8545.
