The entrance to Whitehaven Welcome Center located at 1845 Lone Oak Road off Interstate 24 Exit 7 was closed today for approximately two hours to allow hazardous response crews to test a suspicious white substance found in the parking lot near a drain.
At approximately noon today, the Kentucky HazMat #1 Response Team and the Paducah Fire Department received notification to investigate the white powder. A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet emloyee found the material in the parking lot used by truck drivers.
After testing, the material is identified as starch. The welcome center has reopened to the public.
McCracken County Emergency Management and the Paducah Police Department assisted in today’s response.
HazMat #1 is the regional volunteer hazardous material and weapons of mass destruction response team.
Whitehaven Welcome Center is a restored 1860s mansion. It is the only historic home in Kentucky serving as an interstate welcome center. Whitehaven features period furnishings and memorabilia of Paducah native Alben Barkley, who served as Vice President under Harry Truman.
